On their second date Amira took Michael to meet her therapist, so that he would learn and understand her psychiatric illness. Michael was not intimidated.
Now, several years later, they have four children, and they live on the edge. Michael is all too familiar with the route to the emergency room and the psychiatric ward.
Today, Amira has decided to stop hiding her mental illness (borderline personality disorder) and to open up to the closely knit religious community in which she lives with her family.
|
As a religious woman, she has also found that the rules of Halakhah (Jewish religious law) make her life more difficult to endure, which has motivated her to study and promote a change in the response of the Rabbis towards those coping with emotional distress.
|
For over two years, the director, Rabbi Mordechai Vardi, has followed Amira in her dramatic struggle to stay alive, raise her children, maintain her relationship with her husband, confront dilemmas of Jewish law, and ask: what does it really mean to be normal?
